How I enjoyed this read. Sweet, heartwarming and gripping. Colby and Lauren were absolutely lovely and the story held my interest despite being very drama free. Sometimes it's just about growing up, and written the right way, it is enough. I loved this story and how it was told. The Bridge From Me to You Lisa Schroeder Books Reviews
This was a really cute book that had a very powerful message. I hardly ever cry when I am reading a book. The last book I cried when I read was about three years ago, so I was surprised by how much I teared up in this book. I did not cry, but I defiantly came close a couple of times.
The story was told in alternating points of view between Lauren and Colby. Lauren's mom had kicked her out of the house, so she had just moved in with her aunt, uncle, and little cousins to a small town near Portland, Oregon. There, she meets Colby, the star football players. While Colby enjoys playing football with his teammates, and wants to win State, he also doesn't want to play in college, however, his dad, along with everyone else, expects him to do so. So, when he meets Lauren, how doesn't care that much about football, he really enjoys spending time with her.
The book alters between verse and prose, which I thought was interesting. While I did enjoy the story, I think this is the reason why I decided to give it four stars instead of five. Essentially, I felt as though the story was mostly being told by Colby because his point of view was told in prose. I did not feel like I learned that much about how Lauren's character, or how she felt because her point of view was told in verse.
I have really enjoyed other books by [authorLisa Schroeder|588558], however, I think I would have enjoyed this one more if it did not alternate between verse and prose. She did a beautiful job of telling the story, and it really captured my attention. But overall, I would have liked to read it in either completely prose, or completely verse.
I would definitely recommend this book to others. Especially if you have enjoyed other books by this author, or you enjoy reading books in verse. It might actually be a good book if you are looking to get into reading books written in verse. Overall, this book had a very good message about believing in others and believing in yourself.
It’s the unwritten rule of high school that the new girl and the football star don’t acknowledge each other, let alone talk to each other. For the new girl, it’s extremely hard to find a seat at lunch; for the football star, it’s hard to talk to everyone surrounding him during lunch. Their paths simply don’t cross. But the rule doesn’t apply when the setting is outside of school. In the novel THE BRIDGE FROM ME TO YOU by Lisa Schroeder, new girl Lauren and football star Colby meet each other at the mart and it is love at first sight.
Lauren was forced to move to Colby’s small town to live with her uncle and his family for at least a year until she graduates high school. Her own family --- her mom and her little brother --- live in a different state. In her new town, everyone is obsessed with football, but Lauren doesn’t care about the sport. What will she do to make this place home?
Colby is the town’s football star and as a senior, this is his last chance to bring home the state championship. For the last three years, his life is surrounded by football and he is getting tired. This is his last season, and no matter what happens, he won’t continue playing football in college. He dreams of a bigger life than just football, but how can he look forward to anything when the pressure of the entire town is on him to win the state championship?
When Lauren and Colby meet outside of a mart, they know right away it is something special. For Lauren, talking to him feels like opening a gift; it makes her happy. For Colby, talking to her feels easy --- no mention of football. However, as much as he likes to date, he knows he can’t. Even if he doesn’t like it much, his focus has to be on football, not a girl who can mess up the whole season. Colby shuts Lauren out after an accident that almost takes his best friend away, but that doesn’t stop her. One night, she shows up at the game just like everyone else in town, and that is the push he needs to win the game. After the game, they meet again… at the mart. This time, he asks her out on a real date. However, the date never happens; football practice gets in the way (or should I say the date gets in the way of football?). They finally realize they can’t be anything but friends until the season is over. Lauren is willing to wait for him. No matter the result of the final game, they will have their date the night after. After all this time living alone in this small town, she can finally call this place home. However, one day her mom finally calls her and says that she wants Lauren to come with her to start a new live all over again. Will Lauren throw everything away to be with her mom and hopefully her brother?
Lisa Schroeder does a wonderful job with THE BRIDGE FROM ME TO YOU. Not only does she switch between Colby’s and Lauren’s points of view, but she also switches the genres between poetry and narrative which makes this novel much more fun to read. Readers will have a good time laughing and crying with Colby and Lauren, and once they start the book, they’ll find it challenging to put it back down --- soon they will finish it without even realizing it.
This book is an example of the idiom “don’t judge a book by its cover” (or title, for that matter). When I first saw it, I was expecting a cheesy love story (don’t get me wrong, I love a good cheesy love story) but I was so wrong. This book is much more than that. It’s also about family, hope and believing --- believing in yourself and in the others around you. This book is the perfect book for people who don’t like cheesy love stories --- I promise you won’t be disappointed.
