Throne of Jade Temeraire Book 2 Naomi Novik 9780345481290 Books

Yes, that's how much I liked Temeraire #1, I dove right into #2. I actually bought it instead of waiting for the library book to come in.  And the second one held up admirably, furthering the story of Temeraire and his human, Laurence, putting them into all sorts of jeopardy, and making the dragon even more wonderful.  How is that possible?  But I love Temeraire, and want him as a friend.  I want to hang out with him and talk about politics and philosophy, and read him some good books.

In this installment, the unexpected reveal at the end of #1 has inevitable repercussions, and Laurence and Temeraire are forced to travel to China, to deal with them. Along the way there are worries about the advances of Napoleon's army, as you might expect, but it's also interesting to see Temeraire encounter slaves for the first time, and understand the situation, not just in the abstract, but very much as a personal issue.  That dragon is a thinker, and his instincts are almost always excellent.

And yes, there's danger, and fighting, and people plotting, but the real allure for me was watching Temeraire develop into a real personality, quite outside the influence of Laurence and the air corps. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that he carries much of the burden of the book on his back.  Fortunately he's up to the task.

I'm taking a breather after this because I've got #3 on hold and I really do have to get back to the stack of things I abandoned this month.  All I can say is that if you're up for some ripping yarns about a very smart dragon and his square-jawed gentleman companion, this series is well worth checking out.

Throne of Jade Temeraire Book 2 Naomi Novik 9780345481290 Books Reviews

Not as good as the first book, probably because the dragon concepts which were new in the first one don't have that sense of freshness the second time around. Still it is well written and the characters are interesting.

Unfortunately, this book is more of a long travel novel rather than a real adventure novel. It provides a lot of interesting information to flesh out the world that has been created in book one but lacks a solid plot of it's own. The contrast between the way the dragons are treated in Europe against how they are treated in China is interesting so the book has a lot to offer is you like complexity in your wold building but I found by the end that it felt a bit too much like filler than a book.

I like the characters and the world created so will probably try the next book but if it doesn't have a stronger story line that might be enough for me. Anyone checking the reviews on this book will have already read the first one so no need to detail too much in this review. Just keep in mind that this one is more about getting the dragon and rider from England to China and some fights along the way with a touch of political intrigue rather than actually resolving much in the way of the overall series plot.
Although I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Throne of Jade is not as satisfying. It is slow. 80% of the story actually takes place on the proverbial slow boat to China. By the time they finally arrived, I had lost what interest I had in the plot. In addition, I found a central element of the plot completely unconvincing; that the British government would so quickly bow to Chinese demands and offer to return a dragon that had given them a crucial military advantage against French forces in the previous book seemed more unbelievable than flying dragons.
This second novel in Naomi Novak’s Temeraire series finds the young dragon and his captain, Will Laurence, bound for Imperial China, from whence Temeraire’s egg came. Political turmoil accompanies them, as the egg containing Temeraire was en route from China to the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, when it was intercepted by Laurence’s naval vessel. Temeraire has been flying air missions for the British Air Force, alongside staunchly loyal British dragons and their human captains, and as he grows to maturity, his powerful body is proving to be a wonderful asset against
the French. However, a delegation from China comes to demand their dragon back, much to the shock and unhappy surprise of both Captain Laurence and the dragon himself. Red tape and politics carry the day, and Will finds himself trying to cling to his beloved dragon as the Chinese summon Temeraire “home” to the Imperial court. What follows is an intense, fascinating story of being a stranger in a strange land, and of the transcendence of the bond between dragon and captain. Novik maintains the tone of the first novel, and her prose is sheer pleasure to read. I look forward to reading the next novel in the series.
The journey through Throne of Jade is a long one—and not at all easy for the characters—but I closed the book with a smile on my face.

Temeraire is wonderful as always and in this book we see the gradual maturing of our dear dragon. Novik does a fantastic job of entwining the reader's feelings in with the dragon's. When he was discontented, so was I. And the same went for when he was curious or happy or protective of our dear Laurence. And their relationship, while put to the test in this book, was still a lovely thing to experience.

Even knowing there are seven more books in this series, there were times when I was worried about this dynamic duo and what might become of them throughout this journey.

The only reason I gave this book a 4 star rating was because it didn't have me as enraptured the entire time like His Majesty's Dragon did. That being said, I greatly enjoyed the story as a whole, and found the last 100 pages to be very interesting. This was a long, eventful, and challenge journey and I'm still so glad I picked up book one to begin with. I am wholly dedicated to this series and I look forward to seeing what adventures Laurence and Temeraire have in store for them next.
