*reviewed for MM's by Sophie:There's something about a smart, snarky girl detective character that I just love. Life couldn't be worse for Hartley. First, she finds out that her boyfriend's cheating on her and then while she's snooping around his bedroom, she finds a dead body. Not just any dead body, but the dead body of the girl Hartley suspects he was cheating with. How humiliating. Fortunately for Hartley, a neighbor (who just happens to be the good-looking, brooding type and a senior at her school) was taking pictures of his car and he helps her with what turns out to be a classic mystery.
And Gemma's written it in a style that's a nod to both Veronica Mars and a much, much more sarcastic Nancy Drew. I admit that I looked forward to Hartley's exchanges with Chase (yes, the neighbor who is also the editor of the school's paper) the most. Because the two of them are, in turn, sweet, funny and OMGHYSTERICAL when they are together. There's a scene where Hartley ends up hiding under Chase's bed, which still causes me to giggle when I think about it.
The side characters are well drawn, too. Especially Hartley's best friend, Sam and the police detective, Raley . Even minor characters like the grief counselor, Miss Bessie are brought to life with only a few descriptive words and lines of dialogue. Gemma is masterful at making you laugh, wonder, guess (and incorrectly) and most of all enjoy Hartley's determination to find the killer. As with any good mystery, no one is safe and almost everyone ends up being a suspect, yes, even Chase.
When you're in the mood for a well written YA mystery, be sure to pick up Deadly Cool. In the meantime, I'm ready to go back to Herbert Hoover High for the next installment, Social Suicide, which will be released on April 24th. I need to see what Hartley, Chase and Sam are up to in their next adventure.

Deadly Cool Gemma Halliday Books Reviews
I have a thing for snarky main characters. I picked up Deadly Cool because everyone was talking about how snarky our main character Hartley is and she was! Hartley had one hell of a sense of humor!
Deadly Cool didn't evoke too many emotions out of me, it was more like one of those sit-on-your-porch-drink-lemonade-in-the-summer kind of books (except I don't have a porch, but still...). It's full of wit, a ton of humor and characters that you wish were real so you could befriend them on MySpace right now. The plot while it wasn't too serious was still fun and the mystery behind who was in on all the killings were enough to keep you turning the pages.
As I mentioned, the characters were all fantastic. Hartley was snarky and determined to clear her ex boyfriend's name. I get she still cares about him and all (maybe) but still, the guy shouldn't had been asking for her help. I mean we're all convinced he's cheating on Hartley, he just looks bad in this situation and he should get a freakin clue. But if he wasn't guilty (like he says) then why is he hiding? That part made no sense to me really. And why hasn't Hartley cussed him out yet? Please believe if I saw what she saw he wouldn't hear the end of it! Hartley's best friend Sam was the perfect sidekick for Hartley and Chase, even though I had my doubts about him was pretty snazzy himself. I think he cares about Hartley, it's cute.
Also I'm convinced that the author lives in San Jose because as someone who was born in Silicon Valley, the mall she describes in the book is word for word. Also the street names. It's crazy. But nice when Silicon Valley gets some attention too!
If you're looking for a laid back and funny read this summer, I would definitely recommend Deadly Cool!
I haven't read anything this light and fun in a long time. I already got a laugh out of the summary when I read that she found out her boyfriend was cheating on her with the president of the Chastity Club. The entire book continues in this vein, and it is a frothy confection of somehow relatable absurdity. I never imagined that a murder mystery could be this much breezy fun.
I fell in love with this book!!!! I stayed up until four reading this, and then I had to finish it as soon as I woke up. This book was not what I was expecting at all. It even had me cracking up in several parts. I loved this romance/mystery novel.
Hartley hears rumors that her boyfriend is cheating on her with the president of the Chastity club, Courtney. She ends up finding an opened condom wrapper in his locker. Hartley and Sam, her best friend, head to Josh's house. They break in and find Courtney dead. Josh is the lead suspect for the murder, but no one has seen him except Hartley. She agrees to prove that he is innocent even though he is a cheating loser. Then Chase comes into the picture. Yum is all I have to say. I am totally crushing on him. Even Hartley starts realizing how tall dark and gorgeous he is. Chase is the editor of the school newspaper. He wants the exclusive story so Hartley, Sam and Chase set out to find the killer.
Deadly Cool was a very quick read. It was fast-paced and action packed from the beginning to the end. Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait to read Social Suicide when it comes out in April!!! I am hoping to see a lot more swoon worthy moments with Hartley and Chase!!!
