When I learned this novella had dropped, I immediately one clicked. I am a huge fan of the Renegades series, and by the end of Ricochet, I felt kind of sorry for Josh. I was looking forward to ex-Navy Seal Josh getting his own HEA.So it's Christmas, and as Josh plans a visit back east to visit his family for the holiday, he gets a phone call from his best friend and Seal Team member, Beck, asking Josh to check up on his ex-wife, who isn't returning Beck's phone calls. Problem is, Josh is pining for Grace, who Josh feels is off-limits because she was married to his best friend.
Josh seeks out Grace, and yep, the attraction is as strong, if not stronger, than he feared. And hello, Grace feels the same way about Josh. But Josh is putting Gracie firmly in the friend zone. Beck was his teammate, his best friend, the guy saved Josh's life...Josh is determined not to break the guy code by moving in on Beck's ex. This goes on for about 2/3's of the book.
(At this point, I had to stop. I was frustrated by Josh's reluctance to pursue Grace. I asked my husband, you know, if the couple in question has been divorced for 3 years...Really? Still a no-go? My husband concurred that...well, let's just say dating...a best friend's ex is off the table.)
So things happen-spoilery type things, and I don't want to give it all away-and Josh finally capitulates. But it was so quick, I got reading whiplash. Josh was all "no, no, no!" for so long, then it was, very quickly, full steam ahead.
I think Rumor would have worked better as a full length novel. This author truly excels at characterization and nuances. It's hard to have enough pages to do nuance in a novella. If the transition between full-stop, and all aboard had been a little less abrupt, I would have easily given Rumor 5 stars. Grace is strong and smart, hardworking and dedicated. Josh is sweet and loyal, and utterly in love with Grace. I loved the characters, I just would have liked to have spent more time with them.
Bottom line - Rumor is a must read if you like the Renegades series. If you haven't read the series, you could start here, but why deprive yourself the rest of this terrific series? Start with Reckless, and enjoy the ride!

Rumor A Renegades Novel edition by Skye Jordan Joan Swan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I've loved every book in Skye Jordan's Renegades series and the novella, RUMOR, is no exception. I wasn't sure what I thought of Josh for most of the book in Ricochet (Renegades #3) mostly because he seemed so uptight and his interference with Rachel and Ryker's relationship, but he proved himself a stand-up guy at the end. I was happy to get to learn more about what made him tick and for him to have a second chance to find happiness with his own true love.
After receiving a desperate overseas phone call from his buddy and former teammate, and then not finding Grace in the same situation she'd been in when he'd last seen her Josh thought he’d need to rush in to save her, but Grace was no damsel in distress. Grace was a perfect match for Josh. Strong, independent, sexy, intelligent and determined to make her own way despite the gorgeous ex SEAL's meddling. She knew who she was, what she wanted, and she owned it. And she owned Josh. These two were combustible they were so hot together. Fantastic story. 4.5 stars
~I listened to the audio version. The narrator for this series is one of the best I've heard.
My 4.5 star review from Guilty Pleasures Book reviews dot com
Skye Jordan mixes is up a bit in Rumor by writing a story for a character who isn't part of Renegade's Stunt Team but does some contract work them. I love that she took a somewhat minor character that "lost" the girl in Ricochet and gave him his own story and someone very special of his own. While not as action packed as the other books in this series Rumor is every bit as sexy and hot but it also has a sweet side making it an excellent addition to a very strong series.
Josh Marx couldn't be happier for all of his friends who have found their perfect partner but being around them only reminds him of the one woman he wants but can't have. It doesn't matter that she's divorced and available, it doesn't matter that she wants him too because she is the ex-wife of one of his SEAL brothers, a man he owes his life to and he simply can't get past the guilt no matter how much he wants her. But when that friend needs him to check on her after getting some disturbing news, Josh finds himself wrapped up in her world and wanting to help her build her dreams.
The last person she ever expects to see in Allure, a gentleman's club, is her ex-husband's best friend and the man she wants more than anyone and the one who rejected her a year ago. Grace refuses to deal with another judgmental man who leaves when times get difficult and tries to take over her life.
These two have some history and it hasn't all been good but the one thing that is obvious is how much they both want each other even with the issues between them. I love that once Josh figures out Grace's problems and understands he can't fix them for her, he finds a way to help her without taking over. It was interesting to watch Josh figure out that Grace was a much stronger person than he or her ex-husband believed and how much he admired her for everything she was dealing with all on her own. I give Josh huge kudos for jumping in to help with her Mom and giving both of them some much needed time together.
Their relationship was years in the making with so it was not surprising that their sexy times were explosive and intense. That's not to say they still didn't have some issues they needed to overcome including a very personal issue between them but somehow figured it out with a little help from rumor central.
More heartwarming than the other books in the Renegades series but no less exciting and sexy Rumor was an easy story to love and hard to put down.
